On January 3, 2009 the first event on the Bitcoin block chain occurred. Its founder placed notation indicating the intent behind what he had just created. The London Times ran a cover story entitled “Chancellor on Brink of Second Bailout for Banks”. The block containing this transaction was called The Genesis Block.
Another significant date for Bitcoin was May 22, 2009 when the first exchange of goods for Bitcoin occurred as a purchase of the two Papa John’s pizzas by Laszlo Hanyecz (Jacksonville, Florida) from another bitcoin enthusiast marked what is believed to be the first “real-world” bitcoin transaction. Hanyecz traded 10,000 bitcoins for two large Papa John’s pizzas worth at that time about $25 and estimated $197,830,600 USD on December 17, 2017 when Bitcoin hit $19,783.06
